A few months ago, I posted some local bands that I enjoy listening to here. From what I have seen, all the bands are still going strong, but one of the bands has changed its name. They were known as Something About Chinamen, but they are now known as Apt.4B. You can find them on YouTube here.
They have some new songs out, and they continue to get better.
At the end of last week, I got to finally see Julia Nunes in concert. I have listened to her music for the past 10 years, but she has never come to a place that I could make it to. She travels all over the country doing Living Room Shows. She also does bigger shows, but these are the most intimate type of musical show that I have ever seen. It is just the musician and the fans. When I say fans, I am talking about 50 people who go to someone’s house. I don’t think that the show could really get any better. From the picture below, you can see how close I was.
After the show, she did a meet and greet. I got a picture with her, and she signed a vinyl album that I purchased. It was great all around for me. The person on the left is Julia, and the person on the right is the percussionists, Julia’s girlfriend, and internet sensation, Danielle Owens-Reid.
I was a little skeptical about going to a show like this, but I will definitely be attending again. Julia was a little sick, but she was still a great singer. She sounds amazing acoustically. I love her albums, but I think that acoustic performances are where she shines. I am also a little bit of an acoustic performance nut.
In the past year, I have listened to a lot more local music in the Dallas area. Most places seem to have some type of music being played, and I think that most of the people or bands are pretty good. There are some bad ones, but I am not talking about those here.
Here are some that stood out to me. They are in no particular order. I am just cleaning up random lists of things that I have on my phone, and I thought that putting it here would be a good idea.
This band is great, but they are extremely young. From what I remember, they are all 14-16 years old. I was beyond impressed with them. I hope as they get older they can clean up their music some. The lead singer, John Franklin, has a hell of a voice. The song below tries to show that. They are way better live than most of their videos show.
I like the country, folky sound that this guy has. I bought his album at the show, and I listen to it pretty regularly. Most of his stuff seems to pretty upbeat. I didn’t know the song below was a cover of a song the producer of his album wrote. I think that he does it better than the original, but I think it is because of the different tone that his voice has.
